Conference To Discuss Local Farms And Schools
International Expert Dr. Arden Andersen To Speak
On October 6 and 7 “Eat Smart Eat Local - Reconnecting Farms With Communities” will feature presentations on the connections between fresh food and health and how some communities are helping students make the link with local foods in schools.
Sponsored by the Western Mountains Alliance with funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and in partnership with the Maine Alternative Agriculture Association, the conference is part of a two-year initiative to promote local foods and stimulate farm production in Franklin and Somerset Counties. Project Coordinator and Executive Director of the Maine Alternative Agriculture Association, Paula Day, said, "We are especially concerned with putting the freshest, highest quality foods in our school lunch programs for the consumers who benefit the most from the best nutrition possible - our children."

Day 1, Farm - to - School Panels and Workshops
What is happening in Maine today: What do schools want? Where do they buy for lunch programs? What do schools need to make buying local foods work? Pitfalls and benefits of local foods in school lunch programs?
Day 2, Why It Matters - The Critical Connection Between Agriculture and Human Health. Keynote speaker: Agronomist and medical doctor, Dr. Arden B. Andersen, D.O., Ph.D., practicing physician and one of the world’s top consultants on advanced soil and crop management. "Farmers truly hold in their hands the health, well-being and longevity of their fellow humans."
